At Woolaver Orthodontics, we understand that orthodontic emergencies and unexpected issues can happen during treatment. Dr. Chris Woolaver and our team are committed to helping patients feel comfortable, informed, and supported when problems arise with braces, aligners, or orthodontic appliances.

Orthodontic emergencies are generally divided into two categories: appliance-related issues and direct injuries involving the teeth or mouth.

Orthodontic Appliance Emergencies

Occasionally, braces or orthodontic appliances may become loose, bent, broken, or uncomfortable. While these situations are usually not severe emergencies, they should still be addressed promptly to keep treatment progressing properly.

Common appliance-related issues may include:

  • Loose brackets or bands
  • Broken or bent wires
  • Poking archwires
  • Irritation from braces or appliances
  • Loose retainers or aligners

If you experience any of these issues, please contact Woolaver Orthodontics during office hours so we can schedule an appointment. We are unable to accommodate walk-in emergency visits.

Temporary Solutions for Common Orthodontic Problems

Poking or Irritating Wires

If a wire is causing irritation, place orthodontic wax over the area to reduce discomfort. You may also gently move the wire using a cotton swab or pencil eraser.

Loose Brackets or Bands

If a bracket or band becomes loose but remains attached to the wire, leave it in place and contact our office to schedule a repair appointment.

Broken Archwires

If a wire becomes bent or pokes your cheek or gums, carefully use a pencil eraser to reposition it. In some cases, nail clippers may be used to trim a sharp wire if necessary.

Aligner or Retainer Issues

If your aligner or retainer cracks, warps, or no longer fits properly, contact our office for guidance before continuing wear.

Direct Injuries to the Teeth or Mouth

If you experience a direct injury involving the teeth, jaws, or mouth, it is important to address the injury as quickly as possible.

What To Do After a Dental Injury

  • Apply ice immediately to reduce swelling
  • Contact your general dentist first for evaluation and treatment
  • Seek emergency dental care for knocked-out, fractured, or displaced teeth
  • Contact Woolaver Orthodontics if braces or appliances were damaged during the injury

Your general dentist may need to perform X-rays or emergency treatment before orthodontic appliances can be adjusted or repaired.

After-Hours Orthodontic Emergencies

If you experience significant discomfort or an urgent orthodontic issue after office hours, please call Woolaver Orthodontics. Our team will provide instructions and help determine the next steps for your care.

Protecting Your Smile During Treatment

Many orthodontic emergencies can be avoided with proper care and precautions during treatment.

We recommend:

  • Avoiding sticky, hard, and chewy foods
  • Wearing a mouthguard during sports and physical activities
  • Following appliance care instructions carefully
  • Maintaining excellent oral hygiene throughout treatment
